Everyone understands what he/she hears based on his/her capacity, life experience etc. The party that delivers the message is different than the recipient. We have a common understanding in general but tiny little details makes us unique as human beings. Listening involves attention, being present, and hospitality, and it is a component of devotion, nurturing, and wonder. Listening is our bridge to the wisdom of sacred texts and spiritual teachers. It is an essential part of the discernment process whereby we identify God's messages for us.
Until other sacred works emerged from the religion, The Holy Piby was the main sacred book. The text names the Ethiopians as God’s chosen people. Throughout The Holy Piby, author Robert Athlyi Rogers preached self-determination for Africans, which was a key selling point for African communities in the early 20th century. The central idea here, listed on the front of the book, cannot be overstated. The author clearly explains and illustrates the idea in the first half of the book, and once that is done the book trails off into "typical marriage book" themes (in my opinion). Totally worth the read/listen for the first half, though.
